Chocolate

Chocolate is supposed to be bad for your dog, but my dog eats it all the time.

What are your insights on Chocolate (Man's best CANDY)? Tongue

RE: Chocolate

I think chocolate is definently bad for the dog, I don't know why. Why is chocolate bad anyway? Is it some kind of chemical or something that makes the dog's stomach messed up?

RE: Chocolate

Quite a lot of dogs eat chocolate and ours is no exception, it loves the stuff and is always there whenever a bar is opened!

I dont think it is back at all for dogs, as long as they get regular exercise and you don’t give them too muchSmile

RE: Chocolate

I was also wondering why chocolate is bad for dogs. It's one of those things everyone says but no one knows why.

I don't feed my dog chocolate on purpose, but he gets some sometimes anyway.

RE: Chocolate

Sorry to bring such a serious response on this subject, but I wouldn't want any disasters to happen to any of your dogs!

Chocolate is toxic to the canine. It contains a substance called theobromine, which a dog's digestive system doesn't cope with very well. A dog only processes this very slowly (digesting a half of the remaining amount about every 17 hours) - which means that regular treats of chocolate can build up the theobromine in your dog's body. In small doses, it can cause the dog to become hyperactive, but larger doses can be fatal.

Theobromine is dose dependant, so smaller dogs are at greater risk than larger ones and the amount (and regularity) of the dose is relevant to the effect it creates.

Chocolate seems like such an innocent (and delicious) treat for everyone, but indulgence can have fatal effects to a dog. I found this article on a local web site very informative: http://www.westlancsboxers.co.uk/Poison-caution.htm
. I was also surprised to learn that grapes, raisins and even onions can be harmful, as well as some common house and garden plants.

I have to confess that I still feed my own dogs (boxers) the odd chocolate treat from time to time, but these days I'm careful to control the amount and the time between giving it to them. It's a shame, because they love chocolate in every form, from bars, to cakes, to drinks!

Nothing to add I was going to say the same.
