Diabetic dogs
There was a time when dogs were simply put down when they developed diabetes because it was too expensive and/or time consuming to watch their diet and give shots of insulin.

Have new medications been developed that can be put in the dog's food instead of his having to get injections?

RE: Diabetic dogs
I have never heard of a dog with diabeties. I`ll bet they do have something like your talking about. Or maybe a chewable thing like they do with the heartworm meds.

I am not 100% sure if there are methods other than injections but I do believe that they do offer something in pill form as well. I know now though they are making foods that are able to help control symptoms and flare ups in dogs though I do believe it is still quite expensive.

RE: Diabetic dogs
There are also oral medications given to dogs with diabetes. We have one in the rescue right now and I just cannot think of the name of the medication, but its basically like glucophage for dogs. She takes the pill 4 times a day and her diabetes is under control.

Diabetes that isn't treated can lead to further health complications. The vet will want to perform blood tests to see how high the levels of glucose are in the bloodstream and to make sure no other organs have been affected by diabetes. They will also want to perform a urinalysis to check kidney function and monitor for urinary tract infections, which are common in diabetics.

RE: Diabetic dogs
Diabetes in dogs almost always requires insulin administration. The veterinarian will most likely check your dog’s urine for glucose and possibly draw a sample of blood. The treatment for diabetes is generally divided into three specific parts. The three main components of diabetic treatment are medicine, diet and exercise. From proper nutrition we can also treat dog with the Diabetics.
