Dog and kids question

I am interested in getting a new dog. I know have an infant daugther. I am wondering what type of dogs are usually especially good with kids.

RE: Dog and kids question

I recommend getting a smaller dog. Dogs get very big very fast and your daughter wouldn't be able to keep up with a bigger dog like a golden retriever.

Yes I do see what you are saying. But I also know sometimes little dogs are more hyper and might scare her.

RE: Dog and kids question

Small dogs tend to be hyperactive to compensate for their size. For a small kid, I would advice you to maybe get medium size dog like a Staffordshire Terrier; they can be very affectionate to family members, including children, and to most strangers.Big Grin

From a personal point of view I would not consider getting a dog with a small child, wait until she is a bit older, then you can teach her to look after her and care for her. That way they will be growing up together.

I agree with Jools. You should definitely wait till your kid is older. There are many instances that dogs scare kids at a young age.

Yeh I see the point of waiting until a child is older.  Many people have told me if you get the dog when the baby is younger, they get used to one another and "grow up together"

Try getting her a havanese, I know you and your kid would love it. It's very affectionate and very loyal.

I would suggest the smaller once, it's much to dangerous to have large dogs around toddlers, you couldn't predict what they are always thinking.

RE: Dog and kids question

i think size isn't a important factor if you get it young enough, just make sure it isn't a dog type that is aggresive like pitbulls and such.
