Dog too hyper
What is the best way to calm a dog down so that he is not too hyper all the time and jumping up and down on everything?

Although I don`t like the idea I have heard of some people who give their dogs meds to calm them down. I don`t really know of anyway except try to keep training him.

Work with them to learn the "down" command. Then, if the dog jumps up on you a lot right when you come home, tell them down and ignore them for a while. Make them do a "good down" before they get a pet or anything. Some dogs are just hyper and need a lot of exercise too and some will settle down when they get a bit older. My Dukey Dog is two now and he's getting more settled.

Hyper dogs usually act this way because they need more exercise than they are getting. If you are not able to take them out more you may want to hire a dog walker or get them trained with walking on a treadmill.

Some breeds are more hyper / easier excited than others. Sometimes people buy such a dog without knowing this. I've never had purebreds, and what I did with my mixed breeds was wearing them out with play - they would drop down and sleep for hours. Big Grin
