Elderly cats

My cat "Troy" went missing on 25/11/07. He was 11 years old and apart from having a little bit of arthritis in his back legs, he wasn't ill. All my family and friends keep telling me he has probably gone off to die as thats what cats do. Is this true? I would have thought if he was dying, he would have been ill, and he would want to be with his family. This is really upsetting as I'm missing him like mad.
Has anyone witnessed this happening?

RE: Elderly cats
I have not actually witnessed this but I have heard this also.

Cats in the wild generally will not show signs of illness as not to prevent itself as an easy target for preditios or other doninant cats and can hide any health problems they are having really well. when it becomes too much they find somewhere quiet and let nature take it's course.

I've had a look on google to see if I can see anything to confirm this but nothing yet.
