RE: Finding A Mate

Decent breeders ( ie not the back yard or other types ) after they have health checked their own dogs for any potential health problems their breed may suffer from and possibly any thing else too just to be sure they wont pass anything bad on.........( eg Patella Luxation, Hip dysplaxia, OCD, PRA, etc.......) They then read the breed standard and read it again lol, go to shows, look at lines / pedigrees, look at types which they like the look of and who are sound and catch their eye. Speak to people with the knowledge in their breed. ( dont just use a top winning dog or something that is available either, both could be potentially not the right dog for yours ) See/assess what faults their bitch/dog has and see what she or he would need to strengthen it to improve on for the next generation. eg no point putting two dogs together both have weak fronts or back ends or who say a flat tail compared to the standard. The opposite gendered dog needs to be strong in those areas yours isnt, to try counteract the faults and improve on it to get your puppies. The point of breeding is to get as close to the breed standard as possible and get a better dog than your own from it. Good breeders do breedings to improve on their dog with each litter and not just to make money. Breeding is not easy. Its not fun, its full of hard work, loads of money spent and heart ache many times. Most breeders would be approached to use their stud dog if he is proven to sire good healthy dogs, who can win against strong competition and who fits the breed standard well and who is sound. I would say if someone offers a stud or a bitch to use, or its from a news paper add or free ads website, its usually a sign someone is after money and hasnt a clue. Here are some info on breeding and also types of breeders about. Definately an eye opener.............
