RE: Microchipping

Our Cat little Mo was microchipped about 9 years ago and she has never shown any signs of ill effects from it.

We decided to have her microchipped as little Mo cannot wear a collar and also their is danger that the name tags could drop off.

We wanted to have her chipped for many reasons. cats can sometimes get themselves lost by climbing into a open van or just wandering further than normal. if they got run over i would want to be informed, i think it would be awful for your cat just to diappear and not know what had happened.

Also cat napping is more common than people think and i just wouldn't want to take the risk. There was a recent discussion in one of the national cat magazines reminding vets to always check to see if a new pet paitent has been chipped, just in case they do not belong to the current owner.

I used to work for a animal welfare group and it was surprising just how many cats go missing. Microchipping was always recommended.

I would say that it is peace of mind that chipping gives you and is well worth the fee which i don't think is very much.Smile

RE: Microchipping

well our 2 cats are not microchipped as they go out and always come back our dog diesel is chipped and our stolen staffy is chipped and this has not helped get him back and our bull mastiff will be chipped soon so i agree with getting dogs chipped even though i think its very useless at times

RE: Microchipping

well i have my dog microchipped ~ the problem i see is that vets do not routinely scan animals when they are registered or come in for appointments so they would be lucky to stumble upon a stolen or stray dog that has been taken in for treatment.

until all vets scan animals coming into their practice the technology of the microchip is wasted somewhat unless u get someone who is genuine and has found a lost animal taking it to these people to try and find the orgional owners Frown

RE: Microchipping

I find some of the ideas on this thread very disturbing considering that this site is for animal lovers. Firstly its not expensive to get this done and if that is your main priority you shouldn't even have a pet. Secondly, if your pet is found injured or dead it is the most reliable way of contacting the owner. Collars and tags can fall off or become unreadable through damage. A microchip is not a failsafe in getting a lost pet back but it is the best option for any responsible pet owner. Oh and for the members on this thread that say theres no need because their pet would never run off - have a look at the MISSING pets section on this site. My cat has been gone 3 weeks now. Prior to that she had never been away from me even 1 night. Animals can and do disappear whether through choice or because they have been injured etc so it is your obligation as a responsible pet owner to do everything you can to ensure your pet can be identified.
