Missing Pets Frequently Asked Questions

We have got together a few of the most asked questions about our site. Please read through them and if you need any further information about us, please get in touch.

What is the UK National Missing Pets Register?
Put simply, the National Missing Pets Register is place where you can register your pets, have them assigned a unique PetID and make information available when your pet goes missing. This service is available online 24hrs a day and you have access to your own members section from where you can manage your account and pets.

I think you are offering a great service and I would like to help. Can I?
Very much so, there are a number of ways in which you can help, one of which is by registering and reading through the missing pets listings and if any are in your area, keep a look out and post any sighting or comments for the pet owner. This is a great way to make new friends and also do a service for the community. Other ways are contacting us for some of our leaflets, posters and car stickers which you can distribute for us to spread the word about our website.

Why should I register my Pets?
By registering your pets you are making every attempt to safeguard your family pet. Every pet you register will be assigned a unique PetID and this enables any persons who find's your pet to track you, as its owner.

What happens if I have lost my registered pet?
If you have lost or think your pet may have been lost or stolen, please visit your control panel immediately and click on the 'Missing Pet' section. You will be asked for a bit of information and then your pet will appear on the Missing Pet Register immediately. This information will be able for anyone to view on the internet.

What happens if my pet is lost and is not registered?
You can still add your pet to the 'Missing pet Register' but you will not be able to add photographs and your missing pet listing will not appear immediately. It is worth the few extra minutes it takes to register and your pet will also be assigned a unique PetID.

What information is displayed about me if I register my Pet?
None, we do not disclose any information about you or your registered pets unless you list your pet on our missing pets register, we then need to list certain information about your pet to assist in the recovery and identification. All information can be edited by you in your members control panel. We do not display any email addresses or contact details unless entered by the pet owner in their listings. You have full control over what information is displayed on your missing pet listing.

My pet has a microchip, why should I register?
Most certainly, a microchip does not automatically mean that your pet will be recovered. You will still need to make as many people know that your pet is missing and be on the look-out. It is worth remembering that a microchip is an identification device, not a tracking device. The greater the number of people that know your pet is missing, the greater the odds of a successful recovery.

Who is signing up for the National Missing Pets Register?
Representatives from the National Missing Pets Register are talking with pet owners, people who are pet friendly, rescue groups, shelters, veterinarians, animal hospitals, police, pet supply vendors, and others. All these groups will have access to the missing pet's database.

How is the National Missing Pets Register different from other pet finder systems?
The National Missing Pets Register is more than a registration system; it is a very sophisticated computer network system, which focuses on building community involvement to help reunite missing pets with their families. We pride ourselves on having a fast, user friendly website which is easy to use and full of helpful information for the pet owner.

Can anyone register their pets?
Yes, but you would need to open an account for yourself as the pet owner. After you have opened an account, you will be assigned a unique account number. Pets which are then registered will be assigned a PetID, which in turn is assigned to your account number. This sound complicated but is a very easy and effective way to track pets in the event they are reported as missing.

What type of pets can I register?
Generally you can register any pet which needs to be assigned a PetID for tracking purposes. We have horses right down to hamsters which have been registered, as of, so far, none yet has registered a snake!!

Who runs the UK National Missing Pets Register?
The site is run as a hobby and to assist pet owners to be reunited with their pets. Developed by web designer and programmer, Steve Dawson, after going through the trauma of a missing pet. It is fast developing into a much used resource. Assisted by various people including Dawn, Jim and Karen who willingly give their free time to help.
