My mums always been great about animals. Her parents had a smallholding, so she was used to having animals around and in the house. All of my family has pets.

I just find it odd when I go to a house and theres no animals! Eek

My mum hates animals.. yes i know. how can anyone hate animals, but she really doesnt care for them, but me and my dad and my sister absolutely LOVE animals. Currently have 2 cats (one whom is a stray... My mum wasn't very keen on having her and wanted me to leave her outside but i wasnt gunna leave her in the cold) a dog, a hamster, and 2 goldfish and that amount has gotten smaller as i've gotten older. We've had about 10 hamsters, 2 rabbits, 4 G/Pigs, 2 dogs, 4 cats 2 horses, 1 pony, a goat and a pig at one stage. We live in the country so its not too much of stretch but my dad always talked her round and she actually picked out our dog. I think you have to make someone feel involved for them to accept the change.

No, my parents loved pets, and we had a dog (only one) and a couple of cats at all times during my youth. We got our dog when I was five years old, and she died because of heart problems when I was 17.

Fortunately, now we live in the age of the Internet. Kids having trouble convincing their parents they need pets can point their moms to sites such as this one:

Never had this problem. My parents were both pet lovers, so the love for animals we learned from them.

RE: Mum's who don't allow pets
My parents always had pets and my mum raised poodles and basset hounds. I can understand though, why parents wouldn't let their children have pets. The children may not be responsible enough or there may be not sufficient funds available to make sure pets get the things they need as in vet visits and such. Some parents end up inevitably taking on the pet responsibilities when the novelty wears off with the children and it does eventually.

We lived in an apartment, and pets were not allowed. My grandma lived in a house though and had cats and dogs, so I'd go to her and enjoy their company. Smile

Both my parents loved animals so that wasent a problem for me i was never refused a pet unless i couldnt look after it.
god our house was like a mini zoo!
But i do think you have to learn your kids to look after not just for 5 mins but for the rest of its life.

Xx A dogs love never stops xX

I grew up on a farm so having animals around wasn't an issue, however my dad as good with animals as he was being a farmer..never has been attatched to one singular pet..like say a dog, they were just 'farm animals' and now they dont have any at all. They viewed them as a responsibility and a tie and they travel alot..however I am the exact opposite and am animal mad, my eldest daughter loves them so much last year she turned 'veggi' of her own accord at the age of 11. I support her on this of course! I vowed never to be a mum though that would not have animals around as I think they are theraputic for all age groups especially kids.
