How can you stop a dog from barking when you are not around?

Some people use those dog collars that are supposed to curb barking. I believe they deliver a small electric shock when the dog barks.

I would say put the dog somewhere that they are unable to see if people pass by and maybe they will stop barking.

actually it is little more than a nuisance to dogs with the low amount of voltage that shock collars use. Basically, they are used to train your dog that barking at certain times (use the collars at times you do not want them to bark) is not ok and eventually you can be rid of the collar and the dog will no longer bark. Though I do not think they work that way on all dogs many I imagine they have no effect on at all.

Personally, I have never used one but I have experienced the shock from one and it was nothing at all to worry about or look at as painful.

It sounds a lot worse than it truly is. It isn't as if they are getting the same amps they would from an electrical outlet. It is no more than one might receive while using a TENS unit for pain control. It is only enough to break the dog's concentration.

There's another topic on this, but no, I don't like these, and some dogs have died from them and been severely injured.

RE: Problem Barking
I would like to describe how I taught my sheltie Taz not to bark. When I got Taz as a young puppy (about 10 weeks old), he was a typical yappy sheltie puppy. When I bring a puppy home, I try to take several days off work around a weekend, and then part-time for a couple days after that. Coming home at lunch, or having someone else let the puppy out is also essential for a couple months.

RE: Problem Barking
My eldest dog belonged to someone else before I got him and Ive tried everything to stop him barking, he barks at everything and Im not joking. I tried several things and got one of those collars you mentioned but he was in the zone and ignored it. I also tried a collar that emits a shrill noise which only he is meant to hear everytime he barks but that didnt work either.I did ask the vet and she told me I could have his bark removed, well not his bark but I think you know what I mean. thats a no no for me so I changed vets.I later canvassed my neighbours and it turned out that he only did it for 5 mins after I left, when the postie came and when he heard the taxi bring me home and no one was that bothered by it.I do find though that if he starts barking when Im here I just tell him gun and he shuts up,now thats not how it sounds, lol. I was told to use a small water pistol on one of my chi pups because he was so noisy. it didnt work on him, but the big dog hates it,lol. Now all I have to say is Simba gun and he lays down and doesnt make a noise. lolTongue

RE: Problem Barking
Debarking is illegal in the UK, rightly so, and it should be in US too Mad It's barbaric mutilation, for lazy owners who cannot be bothered to train their dogs.

It depends why your dog is barking, is it seperation anxiety, barking when people/dogs go past, or just barking for the sake of it?
If it's seperation anxiety, that's a whole other issue, and can take a long time to fix.
If s/he barks when people go past, close the blinds, lol Big Grin
Barking for the sake of it, you can get anti-bark collars, the shock type, and a spray kind, citronella, which sprays just past their face, which is meant to distract/shock them out of it. Some also just spray air past their face, which most dogs don't like. Most dogs, rather than learning not to bark at all, just learn not to bark when the collar is on.
You can also try the water pistol, like pocoyomom suggested, but also use a "quiet" command too, so he associates the word with the action of shutting up! The only problem with this method is while you're out of the house, they can continue to bark without the correction, which hinders progress.
