If anyone has ever tried to train a cat to do simple things please let me know how you have got on!

I have just tried to teach mine a simple thing link bringing back a small toy to me, but she was having none of it. I know cats can be trained, but not mine Smile

RE: Training a Cat
I have heard of this but do not know how nor have I ever seen it. I imagine it takes a whole lot of patience to actually be able to train your cat to fetch or things of that nature.

RE: Training a Cat
Recently we moved from a house to a townhouse, when we was living in our house, we had 8 animals, 4 cats and 4 dogs. when we moved, we had no choice but to get rid of 2 dogs and three cats. Well two of the cats we got rid of was Sammy and Sassy brother and sister. they both "fetched" .. We would throw a wadded up piece of paper and they would chase it, bring it back, and drop it at our feet, and sit down and meow. It was so adorable, I desperately miss all the pets we had to get rid of .

In my view training a cat is very important otherwise they will spoil the things in our house.

One of my cats puts his paw up and miows when he wants something. I'm sure he does it because he knows I find it adorable and he gets lots of loving and attention from it!

RE: Training a Cat
I have trained my kitten to go onto his high perch and sit and wait for treats.

To begin with, we only ever give him treats from that one place.

Then every time I gave him a treat, I would push his bottom down firmly and say 'sit' in a calm but firm voice. As soon as he sat down I gave him a treat and gave him loads of cuddles and congratulations.

Once he realised he had to sit, I only had to say 'sit' and he would sit and wait.

Now, I just go in, rattle the box, and he sits and waits for me to come over.

This is the first thing I've trained him to do - I know you reinforce good behaviour, take tiny steps, and also keep on and on doing the same thing.

My kitten learned in three weeks.

RE: Training a Cat
My cat can sit, give each paw when I ask, and does high five.
For the paws, I just picked the paw up, and gave him a treat, over and over, til he lifted it himself. Then I'd put my hand under it, and give him a treat. He got the idea. And got fat.

RE: Training a Cat
I have a slightly overweight cat that I have "trained" to follow me and so we go for good long walk together (no lead needed) to give him some much needed exercise without too much hassle.

RE: Training a Cat
I have tried to train my cat but it is too hard. Learning cats to do things is alot harder than training dogs to do things, cats I think it's possible but extremly hard.

I am an owner of 5cats and I trained 3/5. It is not so hard, you just need to spend alot of time with them and they will start listening to you, give them cokkies, example say " Hand " and tkae his/her hand and then give him a cookie.
