Important NMPR Website Announcement

I would just like to make all members and site visitors aware that we will be undergoing a website transition shortly, this may affect the way the website and database system works, but the updates are imperative to allow enhanced services in the search for lost and found pets in the UK.

At the moment due to the vast numbers of lost and found pets listed on our registers, finding a pet with of a certain breed or colour markings is very difficult. The website has grown at an astounding rate and has proved so popular it has virtually out grown the current functionality which is why I have planned a major upgrade.

Planning has been in the pipeline for the last couple of months thanks to the feedback received the new website is very exciting indeed and hopefully this will allow even more pets to be re-united through our system.

Planed changes / updates are:

New website layout
This is to ensure that e can get as much exposure as possible for your lost and found pets. We are redesigning the layout to allow for faster loading pages and easier website navigation.

New Members Section
This will be updated to allow more control at your fingertips to assist in the search for missing pets or the owners of found pets, one exciting new feature will be ... you have to wait and see on this one, but it will be worth the wait!

Increased Pet Search Options
We appreciate the time it takes to browse through the website with the huge number of listings there are, the new system will allow any multiple of search options to display the pets.

The majority of the changes will be the backend of the website which is being enhanced to allow full advanced search options via:

•	Location / Town / County
•	Postcode
•	Type of pet
•	Breed
•	Dominant colour of the pet
•	Age of the Pet
•	and many other options.

We feel this is a necessary step to take to allow any lost of found pets to be re-united with their owners.

There may be a few disruptions in the progress of this new website when launched so please bear with us while we introduce all the new features for you.

Don’t forget to let us know any features you would like to see implemented.

Proposed target date for the new website is end of January 2010.

Many thanks for reading,

Finding Your Lost Dog

There are steps that you can take to recover your dog once he is lost. First, call your local animal control and police station. Unless you are in a very large city or a high crime area, the police will be happy to keep an eye out for your dog.

It is a more fun activity than chasing speeders or chastising teenagers. Neither of these groups will actively look for your dog, but animal control will usually return home your wayward son if they know whose he is. If he has eaten your neighbour’s pet rabbit, you may get a talking to.

Try not to laugh when you hear the sad fate of the fat rodent. And what ever you do, resist the urge to pat your dog on the head and say: “Good dog! He was tasty, wasn’t he?”. That incident did result in a fine.

Neighbours can also be helpful. If one of them was home when the dog got loose, they may have seen which way she was headed. If you are very lucky, your neighbour lured your dog inside, and she is waiting for you in their laundry room.

This is one of the reasons your neighbours should know your dog. It may only cost you lunch and a kind conversation to get her back. If one of your neighbours has children, you can probably recruit them in the effort to find your dog. You will then have extra hands to find the dog, and your neighbour will have free babysitting for a few hours. It’s a win-win situation.

You can also use this idea when your car needs washing, spring cleaning, etc. If you are on friendly terms, many parents will gladly lend the urchins out for some light work and ice cream. Many children will think that you are giving them a treat. If ice cream is an insufficient bribe, normally older children, a small cash payment will also work. Trapped-at-home moms will be especially grateful for some alone time.

If it has been more than an hour since your dog got loose, you probably will not find him by driving around. He has probably found something interesting and then gotten lost. It is not his fault. He is just being a dog. If he can, he will return home on his own. Most of the time, he can not find his way back home.

If your dog has a radar tag, you can call the registration service and put out an alert. If he gets his collar off, or someone can not read it, your only hope is that his radar implant. Most animal controls have readers for these tags, so if he has one and is picked up by the pound, he has a ticket home. No tag, no collar, no free ride.

If your dog does not have a radar implant, your only hope is to pray that he keeps his collar on. If he is still wearing his collar, he has a good chance of making it home.

You might advertise a reward in the newspaper. Collectors keep an eye on these advertisements. If you offer more than the dog fighters or the laboratories, then you have a chance at a phone call. Whatever you do, do not accuse them of prowling for dogs. Just go over there and get your dog. If you see a lot of dogs in their yard, you might tip off the police. This probably will not be effective unless they are really stupid, but most criminals are stupid. If they were smart, they could con money legally.

The two biggest factors in retrieving your dog happen before he gets lost: tags and implants. If he has tags and radar implants, he will likely come home. With only tags, his chances are good if he does not get his collar off. These are very inexpensive procedures that will save you much heartache later.

You will need just a few minutes a day, to scan though the missing pet’s listings to see if any are missing in your area. You can then join in the chat and post sightings or messages of support for the pet owner. This gives great satisfaction that many members are looking for other members pets in their area.
We have got together a few of the most asked questions about our site. Please read through them and if you need any further information about us, please get in touch.

What is the UK National Missing Pets Register?
Put simply, the National Missing Pets Register is place where you can register your pets, have them assigned a unique PetID and make information available when your pet goes missing. This service is available online 24hrs a day and you have access to your own members section from where you can manage your account and pets.

I think you are offering a great service and I would like to help. Can I?
Very much so, there are a number of ways in which you can help, one of which is by registering and reading through the missing pets listings and if any are in your area, keep a look out and post any sighting or comments for the pet owner. This is a great way to make new friends and also do a service for the community. Other ways are contacting us for some of our leaflets, posters and car stickers which you can distribute for us to spread the word about our website.

Why should I register my Pets?
By registering your pets you are making every attempt to safeguard your family pet. Every pet you register will be assigned a unique PetID and this enables any persons who find's your pet to track you, as its owner.

What happens if I have lost my registered pet?
If you have lost or think your pet may have been lost or stolen, please visit your control panel immediately and click on the 'Missing Pet' section. You will be asked for a bit of information and then your pet will appear on the Missing Pet Register immediately. This information will be able for anyone to view on the internet.

What happens if my pet is lost and is not registered?
You can still add your pet to the 'Missing pet Register' but you will not be able to add photographs and your missing pet listing will not appear immediately. It is worth the few extra minutes it takes to register and your pet will also be assigned a unique PetID.

What information is displayed about me if I register my Pet?
None, we do not disclose any information about you or your registered pets unless you list your pet on our missing pets register, we then need to list certain information about your pet to assist in the recovery and identification. All information can be edited by you in your members control panel. We do not display any email addresses or contact details unless entered by the pet owner in their listings. You have full control over what information is displayed on your missing pet listing.

My pet has a microchip, why should I register?
Most certainly, a microchip does not automatically mean that your pet will be recovered. You will still need to make as many people know that your pet is missing and be on the look-out. It is worth remembering that a microchip is an identification device, not a tracking device. The greater the number of people that know your pet is missing, the greater the odds of a successful recovery.

Who is signing up for the National Missing Pets Register?
Representatives from the National Missing Pets Register are talking with pet owners, people who are pet friendly, rescue groups, shelters, veterinarians, animal hospitals, police, pet supply vendors, and others. All these groups will have access to the missing pet's database.

How is the National Missing Pets Register different from other pet finder systems?
The National Missing Pets Register is more than a registration system; it is a very sophisticated computer network system, which focuses on building community involvement to help reunite missing pets with their families. We pride ourselves on having a fast, user friendly website which is easy to use and full of helpful information for the pet owner.

Can anyone register their pets?
Yes, but you would need to open an account for yourself as the pet owner. After you have opened an account, you will be assigned a unique account number. Pets which are then registered will be assigned a PetID, which in turn is assigned to your account number. This sound complicated but is a very easy and effective way to track pets in the event they are reported as missing.

What type of pets can I register?
Generally you can register any pet which needs to be assigned a PetID for tracking purposes. We have horses right down to hamsters which have been registered, as of, so far, none yet has registered a snake!!

Who runs the UK National Missing Pets Register?
The site is run as a hobby and to assist pet owners to be reunited with their pets. Developed by web designer and programmer, Steve Dawson, after going through the trauma of a missing pet. It is fast developing into a much used resource. Assisted by various people including Dawn, Jim and Karen who willingly give their free time to help.

The registration process for your pet is very straight forward. All you have to do is create an account at the UK National Pet Register and then add your pets to the database. You are permitted to have up to 3 pets listed under your account. You will need to provide certain information to register an account; this is to ensure that in any event that may arise regarding your pet whereabouts; we are able to contact you.

You do not need to have a pet to join the UK National Pet Register. Many of our current members are non pet owners who simply want to help re-unite pets with their owners.

The only time your pet information will be available on the UK National Pet Register website is when you place your pet on the 'Missing Register' this then alerts all our members that your pet is missing and they can then see your pet information along with all the other pets that have been reported missing. This greatly increases the chances of your pet being found.

Register and create an account at http://www.nationalpetregister.org/register.php

To add your pet as missing to the missing pets database at http://www.nationalpetregister.org/mp.php you will need to submit the pet information and include as much information as you can including:
You can add your pet to the missing pets register at http://www.nationalpetregister.org/register.php or if you would like to create a petid for your pet, then you will need to register and create an account.
